New Insights into the Growing Obesity Epidemic

For the second year in a row, data from the Trust for America’s Health demonstrate that obesity rates have increased substantially in 22 states, and no states exhibited a decrease in obesity rates. The report, available online at http://healthyamericans.org, also found that 22% of American adults do not engage in any physical activity. The highest rated and first state to exceed an obesity rate of 30% in adults was Mississippi. The leanest state, with a 0.7% increase of adult obesity, was Colorado. The South houses 10 out of 15 highest rated states for adult obesity, and eight out of 10 highest rated states for overweight children. Rates of adult obesity exceeded 25% in 19 states, representing an increase from 14 states last year and nine states in 2005.
